Hello, my name is Nicola Davies and I am delighted to have been chosen as Writer in Residence for BookTrust.

Writing about animals and nature

I've written lots of books and nearly all of them are about animals and nature, in some way – and I've been lucky enough to travel to lots of different parts of the world and see the animals in their homes.

I've seen whales and dolphins in oceans all over the place. I've watched elephants crossing the river in Borneo. I've seen gibbons singing in the treetops in Vietnam. And nearly all of my adventures have made it into my books.

Something to see, wherever you live

But the place I find most inspiring is actually where I live now, in the green hills of Wales. I can watch red kites and buzzards and ravens from my office window. I can walk up the hills and beside the rivers. And what I really love to do is put some of that into words and pictures. So I'm hoping through my words and pictures, you'll get to know a little bit about the nature around where I live.

I'm also hoping that you'll be inspired by the nature where YOU live and make pictures and poems about it. Trust me: even if you live in the heart of the city, there'll be something to see.

Ideas, inspiration and a poetry competition

We're going to be running a poetry competition to give you extra inspiration and offering prizes of books and also a visit from me to your school.

Every single one of my posts I hope is going to give you a little bit of the "three Is": first of all, information, because you might need some help deciding what you're going to write about; secondly, ideas, because you might need some help with how you're going to write about it; and thirdly, inspiration, just to make your writing really take flight.

'Everybody needs to plan for adventures'

Now, a lot of my posts are going to come from here, the BookTrust offices in London, but also from my home in Wales, and from libraries – because that's where books live, and I really love a good library.

But I'm hatching a plot to make some posts from somewhere else too, because everybody needs to plan for adventures...
