Evaluating your impact

Monitor and report the impact Bookstart Corner is having on your families and setting. 

We provide a selection of tools to help you monitor the impact of Bookstart Corner on the individual families you work with and evaluate and report on the impact as a whole for your setting.

The tools are easy to follow and adapt to the way you have delivered Bookstart Corner. They are forms which should only take around five minutes to complete.

Understanding families’ needs

To identify where a parent/carer is with regards to supporting their child’s learning, you can use the Learning Stair model, reproduced from Early Home Learning Matters: Good Practice Guide by Kim Roberts (2009).

Please note this model is for reference only, and the terminology should not to be shared with families. It is a simple way of keeping track of a parents' or carers’ development and prompts consideration about what they need from practitioners.

Post-session observations

We encourage practitioners to reflect on the progress of a family after working with them in a Bookstart Corner session.

• If you are delivering multiple sessions for a family, keep track of their progress and plan forthcoming sessions
• Inform how you approach other work you may be doing with a family
• Identify trends and the overall impact of delivering Bookstart Corner
• Review different approaches to delivering Bookstart Corner

Post-delivery monitoring

After delivering Bookstart Corner with a family, it is useful to record how it went in relation to the planned structure, and any actions that will be taken for the family next.

• Measure how Bookstart Corner is being delivered in practice in your setting
• Monitor the objectives of delivering Bookstart Corner to families
• Review the longer-term impact of a family’s involvement in local services as a result of Bookstart Corner
