Books to reassure little ones about starting school

Published on: 11 September 2017 Author: Lydia Monks

Author and illustrator Lydia Monks shares her favourite books about big school – perfect for any child shy or nervous about making friends and settling into their class.

The little mouse in my new book Mouse’s Big Day is a bit nervous about starting big school. Her mummy has tried to tell her that it’ll be fun, but Mouse isn’t convinced. She spends most of the day hiding and not wanting to join in with all the others. The other children are very kind to her, and in the end she learns that school isn’t so bad after all.

I remember being a bit of a mouse at school. I was very shy and nervous and didn’t want to take part in things, even fun things. I think I was worried about looking silly or doing something wrong. I still feel a bit like that as a grown-up! Sometimes, if we are very brave, those scary things that we don’t want to do, turn out to be not so bad after all.

Here are some other fun books about school:

Maisy Goes to Nursery

Lucy Cousins, Walker Books

Maisy Mouse is one of the most loved characters in children's books.  This charming story sees Maisy experiencing her first day at nursery and all the fun that comes with it!

Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School

David Melling, Hodder Children’s Books

Hugless Douglas is very excited to be going to Little School. There will be so much to do, so many new people to meet – and, of course, lots of hugs to be given out!

Lydia Monks, Macmillan

Mungo is very excited to go to school, as his teacher has said they are going on a bug hunt. In the jungle, there are plenty of bugs to find. What could possibly go wrong?

Whiffy Wilson: The Wolf Who Wouldn’t Go To School

Caryl Hart and Leonie Lord, Orchard Books

Whiffy Wilson proves just how much fun school can be in this charming and witty picture book. Wilson doesn't know how to hold a pen and has never read a book, but soon discovers that he can make new friends and play as he learns – school is THE BEST THING EVER!

How to Hide a Lion at School

Helen Stephens, Alison Green Books

How to Hide a Lion at School is a visual treat – and full of laughs, as Iris desperately tries to keep her rather large best friend hidden on a school trip.
