Publisher: Nosy Crow

Selvi is a loner who loves to roam the mountainside near her home on the island of Serendib, where she spends time with her secret friend, a wild leopard named Lokka. She is furious when classmate Amir finds out about Lokka. He threatens to tell others if she does not take him to see the leopard, so Selvi reluctantly agrees. However, as the children go in search of the animal, it soon becomes clear that they are not the only ones looking for him. Although the hunting of leopards is banned in the region, Lokka’s magnificent coat with unusual markings has made him a target for poachers, who will stop at nothing to catch their prey and make their fortune. Selvi is desperate to protect Lokka but is also terrified that the unscrupulous poachers will hurt her family if she stands in their way.

This exciting adventure raises awareness of the illegal trade in wild animals and encompasses themes of friendship, loyalty and standing up for what is right. The chapter headings are illustrated with striking black-and-white artwork, which will help readers to visualise the characters and setting of this engaging tale.
