The Cupcake Diaries: Katie and the Cupcake Cure

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

In the first Cupcake Diary we meet Katie, who has just started at middle school. Nervous at the transition, she is reassured that her lifelong best friend Callie will be with her, but it emerges that Callie has made friends with a different set during the summer holiday. Katie finds new friends, but we suspect that Callie will return.

Katie is a character with whom mid-primary age girls will empathise, and her handling of the changes in school and friendships should help to empower and reassure them. Although the setting is in an affluent US town, the message is universal: what we get out of life is what we put in - and that also goes for the cupcake recipes!
