The Best Mother

Maxine hates all the everyday things her mum makes her do: getting up, getting dressed, cleaning her teeth... She suspects that if she had a different mother, things would be much nicer. So, while Maxine and her mum are out at the park, the toy shop and the zoo, Maxine asks other mums if they’d let her buy expensive rockets, wear scary masks, wear her slippers in the snow and bang a drum anytime she wants to. Generally, the answer is 'no'!

As Maxine talks to the other mothers, she starts to realise that her mum – the one who invented the "Throw the Toys in the Box" game, who played hide and seek with her while wearing monster masks, and the one who bought her a telescope to look at the stars – really isn’t so bad, and maybe the grass isn’t greener on the other side...
