The Best Me! A first book of self-care for healthy and happy children

Publisher: Macmillan Children’s Books

What is self-care and how can we make sure we do it every day – as well as look after others? Self-care might be keeping clean and healthy, exercising, resting, saying no to things we don’t want to do, expressing ourselves and being kind. Even if we just do some of these things, self-care is a great habit to get into from an early age.

Marvyn Harrison is the founder of Dope Black Dads, a support organisation for black fathers. At the end of The Best Me! he also shares his approach to raising children’s self-esteem by practising positive affirmations, as well as a guide to reading together with ideas for how to use the book to inspire conversations and activities with your children.

Rochelle Falconer’s bold, bright illustrations depict a lovely black family, showing the children doing their best to be their best selves every day, but also accepting themselves as they are, and understanding that Daddy loves them very much. This is a sweet picture book to share at any time with plenty to talk about with little ones, with the added bonus of containing some fab, useful and achievable techniques for bolstering your child’s self-esteem and encouraging them to look after themselves.
