Rewild: Can Nature Heal Our World?

Publisher: David Fickling Books

Without shying away from the facts that due to human activity the world is under dire threat, this book is all about the solutions rewilding offers and how we can make it happen. From the benefits of bringing back beavers, wolves and even mammoths, due to their places in food chains and work they do, to rewilding the sea, to planting the right trees in the right places. It’s all explained brilliantly with amusing illustrations by Moose Allain, cartoon questions from a child and a particularly helpful know-it-all fungus who answers them. So, although it’s a heavy subject, it feels like a light read with no prior knowledge needed.

Many children have eco-anxiety to some degree which is unsurprising given what’s happening to our world. But the end result of reading this book is a head full of positive possibilities. Instead of focussing on everything we have to give up (holidays, cars etc), this book looks at all the things we’d gain from a wilder, less polluted world. While being honest and facing hard truths, the book explains how it is still possible to halt the biodiversity and climate crisis from spiralling out of all control. This book tells you how in just over 150 highly illustrated pages and feels like an important message for everyone. It’s part of the excellent Explodapedia series which is well worth looking into.
