Summer Active

This programme is no longer running.

Summer Active was a BookTrust project designed to encourage reading for pleasure amongst 11-year-old children.

The programme targeted children performing below their expected reading level at a really crucial period in their lives - the move from primary to secondary school. Supported by almost 40 volunteers, over 100 children at 10 secondary schools were gifted a series of bookpacks, which include specially selected books, games and stationery items.

Girls reading in summer

Over the summer holidays the children attended exciting, fun-packed days, with lots of activities designed to encourage a love of reading. The children then met again with the volunteers, and received more bookpacks. There were also sessions led by a local authors.

Summer Active was a pilot project funded by the Education Endowment Foundation. It was run in 2013 as a randomised control trial and BookTrust worked with Sheffield Hallam University and Queen's University Belfast to evaluate its impact.
