Evaluating Story Hunters

Use these ideas and resources to help you measure the impact of Story Hunters.

Aims of Story Hunters

The short-term aims of Story Hunters are to:

  • improve children's engagement, enjoyment and confidence with reading
  • encourage children to read, write and draw more often
  • increase the amount of time that parents/carers and children spend together sharing books and activities.

The long-term aims of Story Hunters are to:

  • improve children's academic attainment
  • help children and parents to build their relationships
  • increase engagement and build relationships between parents/families and schools.

Surveys

These surveys should be used before and after children receive their Story Hunters packs.

The survey questions are designed to find out how children and parents/carers feel about reading. You can then compare the results to see whether there have been any changes once children have taken part in Story Hunters.

The 'after' surveys also include some questions on the Story Hunters parcels and contents, so you can see what your students thought of the programme.

The surveys are designed to help you measure the short-term aims of Story Hunters, i.e. engagement, enjoyment, confidence and frequency of reading, writing and drawing.

Alternatively, you might want to adapt them or use your own.

Attainment data

You may also want to compare children's reading and writing levels before and after they take part in Story Hunters, to measure any differences. Please use the measures your currently have in place due to the absence of curriculum levels.

Note: In the short term, Story Hunters aims to increase the children's engagement, enjoyment, confidence and frequency of reading, writing and drawing. It is intended that this will lead to improved academic attainment in the long-term.
