2019 is a very special year for us – we’re proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Letterbox Club in Wales.

Letterbox Club is an award-winning programme run by BookTrust Cymru in partnership with the University of Leicester, Welsh Government and Local Authorities. Parcels are filled with carefully selected with books, resources, stationary and number games. These are sent to the Letterbox Club members - children who are looked after or vulnerable, aged 3-13. Each member receives a parcel monthly for six months, encouraging reading for pleasure and learning at home.

For some of the members, it's the first time they've received anything in the post or had a book of their own to keep. Shannon, a child who is looked after, said:

‘I thought WOW when I got the parcel because I have never ever had a package or a parcel in my entire life I am 10 years old.'

Over the last 10 years Letterbox Club has sent parcels to over 10,000 children in Wales. That’s a grand total of 120,000 books going straight to children’s homes!

Letterbox Club helps carers and families and their children spend more time together reading for pleasure and playing games. Members feel remembered and excited about each parcel delivery and the parcels help increase confidence in reading and numbers.

Parcels have included books from wonderful Welsh writers including new Children’s Laureate Wales Eloise Williams, Anni Llŷn and Eurig Salisbury, who were both formerly Bardd Plant Cymru.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our partners at the Welsh Government and in Local Authorities who help us deliver Letterbox Club parcels to over 800 children every year.
