Poo Poo Bum Bum Wee Wee

Publisher: Penguin

Designed to take the stress out of toilet training, Poo Poo Bum Bum Wee Wee has been made with one thing in mind: SILLINESS!

Most kids, let’s face it, are going to be won over from the get-go with this constant refrain:

'Poo poo, bum bum, wee wee –
I sing my toilet song.
Poo poo, bum bum, wee wee –
I sing it all day long!'

Writer Steven Cowell doesn’t shy away from the nature of poos or wee: these poos are brown and most definitely smelly. The book is informative, breaking down the stages of going to the toilet into easy steps, from wiping your bottom to washing your hands, and shows the poos whooshing away through pipes once the toilets are flushed. (It’s worth noting that the book doesn’t show potty training but instead focuses on using a toilet.)

None of this detracts from the fun, anarchic nature of the picture book, best captured by Erica Salcedo’s bright and comical illustrations. She gives the poos wacky faces (reminiscent of South Park’s Mr Hankey, the Christmas Poo) and you get to see a dad on the toilet at the end. Yes, children: grown-ups need to do their business, too!

If you want to induce lots of giggles and reduce any worries, then Poo Poo Bum Bum Wee Wee is a great book to read with your child about taking this next step. They’ll be using the toilet confidently in no time – and serenading you with the 'toilet song' for a long time to come!
