Rose is miserable and one morning she confides in her Uncle Vinnie. Although she is worried about reading in class, her real problem is Zack, a school bully, who teases her and the other children.

Uncle Vinnie tells Rose that bullies are usually scared of something, and after a lot of thinking Rose remembers that Zack doesn't like the class rat. Vinnie gives her a book with a magic story to read out in class, assuring her that when the time comes she'll know exactly what to say.

This is an inventive and thought-provoking story about bullying at school, which nevertheless manages to retain a positive tone and concludes with a happy ending.
