Girl on the Fly

Publisher: David Fickling

13-year-old Kamaria likes rhythm and routine. They help her feel safe and in her proper place in the world. So when she finds out that Aunt Rose is coming all the way from Tanzania to stay with the family for an unspecified length of time, it throws her off-kilter.

Kam is already unsettled by a fall-out with her best friend Odie, but at least she has support from the other three girls who make up the 4 x 100-metre relay team. Perhaps that's what she needs to focus on? If they can win the state championship, it will be a fitting end to the school year.

But there are a lot more obstacles in the way than Kam had anticipated. Can she cope or will she crumble?

Set in Philadelphia, USA, in 1992, this coming-of-age story is packed with cultural and musical references from the era and explores themes of family, resilience and the evolving nature of friendships.

Once Kam opens herself to new experiences, she finds that Aunt Rose is something of a kindred spirit who teaches her, little by little, to know herself, be herself, and trust herself.

A great read for anyone unwilling to leave their comfort zone.
