Flat Cat

Publisher: Walker Books

Sophie adores her cat Jimi-my-Jim and gives him everything a cat could ask for: glittering collars, toys, a cat gym. Yet Jimi longs to be able to leave the flat in the tall building they live in because staying inside is making him feel very flat – a flat, cardboard cut-out cat.

So, one day, when Sophie and her mother accidentally leave their keys lying around, Jimi makes a break for it and meets Blanche, who shows him around the city. Jimi and Blanche have such a good time that they bring the party back to Jimi’s apartment, forgetting that the humans are home soon. Perhaps there’s a way to make sure that Jimi can stay friends with his fellow cats without resorting to chaotic, jazz cat soirees.

A lovely story about a pet that lives in a city apartment block, this is a nice reminder that many children also live in cities, as well as the moral that things don’t make people as happy as friends and family – and freedom – do.
