Cuckoo!

Publisher: Hodder Children's Books

Cuckoo’s a bit of an oddity: all of the birds at home seem to be able to understand each other, but no-one speaks his language. So off he sets in search of someone who speaks cuckoo, but neither the sheep, nor the frogs, nor the rabbits, nor the pigs understand him either. Even learning the other animals’ words at Madame Sheep’s School of Excellence doesn’t help: but rest assured, there’s someone out there who knows what he’s talking about.

Exploring issues of acceptance and belonging, this is a quirky tale that’s as inventive as it is funny. Robertson’s illustrations are excellent: clean and colourful, each page is bursting with lively characters and witty details. A clever and surprising picture book that gives a well-needed boost to the unfairly maligned cuckoo.
