Catherine's Story

Publisher: Frances Lincoln

This is the story of Catherine, a very special little girl who also happens to have severe additional needs.

Her cousin Frances wonders just what is so special about Catherine but when she tries, unsuccessfully, to walk in her cousin’s special boots and watches the way she listens intently to others rather than talking too much, she realises that the ability to do these things are what really make Catherine unique.

Although some readers may find the repeated descriptions of Catherine as being ‘special’ a bit dated, they are there to emphasise that her personal qualities, rather than her disability, are what make her exceptional.

Littlewood’s illustrations add warmth and colour to this moving text. Joyful spreads, including Catherine walking through a park full of sunflowers, help to give the book a celebratory feeling.
