Bluebelle – aka BB, aka "Big Bones" – is a 16-year-old girl who loves food. She is perfectly happy to be overweight and unlike the ‘tiresome’ girls at her school (obsessed with starving themselves beyond all else), she likes being big. In fact, Bluebelle's very grouchy about being forced to tackle her "problem" with a food diary and going to the gym. Then a family tragedy forces BB to find a new relationship with her body and herself...

Big Bones is a truly refreshing read, and Bluebelle is a wonderful, honest and utterly hilarious narrator to fall in love with. This book will make readers think about body image in a whole new way, and about the importance of self-respect and appreciating yourself for who you are. It also depicts the sweetest of sibling relationships.

Laura Dockrill has such a unique writing style and her poetic freshness is a joy to behold. One second, you are laughing big belly laughs at her turn of phrase, and the next, you are crying There is so much food for thought in Big Bones, making it a book for teenagers to savour, and, above all, enjoy. Adult readers may wish they'd had the book to accompany them when they were teenagers, too.
