Lilith is the last surviving member of the House of Shadow - she was never meant to rule but the assassination of her family has left her no other option.

Thorn has been captured and sold as a slave to Tyburn, the House of Shadows' deadly executioner. All he knows about where he is being taken is they drink blood and like raising the dead. Both are surprised to find an ally in the other.

As the Kingdom of Darkness is under threat of collapse, the duo - with the help of a giant bat and a hostage prince - try to discover the source of the danger.

Khan has created a wonderful, richly detailed world divided into six magic kingdoms. Right from the first page, the story grabs the reader, forcing them to care about the unusual protagonists. It is an exceptional start to what looks set to be a very exciting series.
