Explorers on Witch Mountain

Publisher: Faber & Faber

Review

After the death of her parents, Stella is adopted by Felix, an intrepid explorer and fairyologist. She enjoys a life full of adventure and is extremely proud to become the first female member of the Polar Bear Explorers’ Club. As an Ice Princess, Stella possesses magical powers, but fears if she uses them too much, her heart will turn to ice, leaving her unable to feel love, friendship or compassion.

When Felix is attacked by a vicious bone-crunching vulture, he sets off to Witch Mountain to confront Jezzybella, a witch whom he believes sent the bird to harm Stella.

Desperately concerned for his safety, Stella seeks help from her friends, Beanie, Shay and Ethan. Together, they make the perilous journey to the home of the witches, where they encounter unimaginable dangers, including flying sharks, webbed-fingered vampire trolls and giant ice spiders.

This is the second volume in an exciting series about these tenacious junior explorers. The eclectic mix of characters provide plenty of humour, such as the jungle fairies, with their insatiable appetite, bad manners and chant of doom whenever they sense danger. Reminiscent of Victorian-style expeditions to unexplored territory, this marvellous fantasy adventure celebrates courage, loyalty and diversity.
