Crow Moon
Publisher: Quercus
Danny is a fun-loving 16-year-old looking for a father figure and falling in love with a different girl every day. He certainly doesn't want to follow in his mum's witchy footsteps. Just as his eco community is being threatened by gangs intent on finding a lucrative power source to sell to the world, Danny discovers he is stunningly powerful. And when he falls for Saba, a gorgeous but capricious girl sorceress, he thinks maybe the witch thing might not be such a bad idea. But with his community on the brink of war, Danny finds that love and sorcery are more dangerous than he ever imagined…
Crow Moon is an utterly unique take on witches, dystopia, and the environment. The magic in this book feels very real and the world that Danny lives in, a world where there are almost no natural resources left and is full of gang violence, seems not too distant. McKerrow perfectly captures Danny's voice, he is funny and irreverent and a little bit girl crazy, but he's brave and thoughtful too. The novel is cinematic and sweeping with the perfect blend of real world and magic. The ending is satisfying but leaves the reader anxious to read the sequel to find out what happens next for Danny and his community.
