Introducing our new Writer in Residence Patrice Lawrence

Hi, I'm Patrice Lawrence and I am really privileged to be the new BookTrust Writer in Residence from September 2024 until next February. My role is to look at how reading for pleasure can benefit children facing challenges. And, for me, that will be children who are affected by war, children who are struggling to find safe housing, children, perhaps, who are struggling in different types of family, environmental and social care. Children perhaps, who also are young carers and we know, obviously many young people and children can go between these different roles but also might be a young carer who's struggling in a family situation.

For me, books have multitudes of benefits in terms of wellbeing, in terms of taking us out of ourselves, but also in terms of empathy and understanding how different people live. So in the next six months, what I hope to do is to share some of my own joy with reading and some of also why this particular topic is something that is so close to my own heart.
