The Diamond Girls
Publisher: Random House
The Diamond girls are sisters: Martine, Jude, Rochelle and the heroine Dixie, who together comprise a convincing portrait of all the complexities of contemporary family life - complete with the usual sibling rivalries.
Plain Dixie is not pretty or clever or streetwise like her sisters, but she lives in the vivid world of her own imagination with her toy budgie, Bluebell.
When Mum, who is expecting a new baby, decides to move the whole family to another estate, they are aghast to find it is almost derelict. Then Mum goes into labour...
Aimed at older readers, this is ostensibly one of Jacqueline Wilson's more hard-hitting novels. It deals with adult themes of birth, sexuality, teen pregnancy, gang-culture, abuse and post-natal depression, but all in Wilson's usual credible, accessible, first-person narrative style, with a charm and lightness of touch that belies the serious subject-matter.

The Diamond Girls is amazing. I loved little Dixie and felt so sorry for her, because she had to hide her Mum's secret about the new baby-she was going through alot. I was surprised that Martina got pregnant at 16, drama! I felt sooo sorry for poor Mary, her Mum cut her finger nails to the bone and stuffed bread crusts down her throat, till she was sick. Poor Dixie broke both her legs in the end, but hopefully she got better. I love this book, its full of drama and surprises!

[Spoiler alert]
I loved little Dixie, and I felt I understood her, as we are the same age. I'm glad she had Bluebell, her beloved soft toy bird, tucked under her blue cardigan. Jude, her sister was my second favorite character because she really cared about Dixie, and understood her. Jude is really tough and forever getting into fights with all the boys on there new home, Planet Estate. Martine is 16, the eldest, and all she cares about is her beloved boyfriend, Tony...

This book is about birth, jealousy, and other themes that are quite inappropriate. There are swear words, but I got caught up in the drama, and this book is very amazing! Aimed at teens.
