The Battlemage

Publisher: Hodder Children’s Books

At the end of The Inquisition, Fletcher, the hero of the Summoner series, has to jump straight into the mysterious ether, a place believed to be poisonous to humans – and populated by demons.

Leading his team of friends through a variety of ordeals there isn’t easy, and when they finally escape the ether, there’s a final, decisive battle to be fought against baddie Khan and the orcs to protect the people of Hominum.

Combining classic fantasy elements of magic, dragons and supernatural beings with elements of Pokemon-style gaming, Matharu also weaves in an important and deft thread of politics and a sensitive analysis of prejudice into this series, giving it a real depth that never detracts from it also being a page-turning action classic.

The conclusion to the incredibly successful Summoner trilogy has plenty of action, and, while it’s emotional to leave Fletcher and the other well-drawn characters, Matharu ends things on a high with dragons, demons, battles and revelations galore.
