Stig of the Dump
Publisher: Puffin
Barney is a solitary little boy who often wanders off by himself in the countryside. Exploring an old chalk pit, he finds himself in a cave where he meets a strange boy who wears a rabbit skin and speaks in grunts. His grandparents don't believe Barney when he tells them about his new cave boy friend - but nevertheless, the two enjoy plenty of fun together.
This lovely story about the unlikely friendship between Barney and stone-age Stig has stood the test of time. Although it is now over 50 years old, contemporary children will love reading about the pair's lively adventures. Clive Kings' story is perfectly accompanied by Edward Ardizzone's classic illustrations.

I remember reading this as a child (20ish years ago!) and loved it. Recently found a copy and fell in love all over again. According to the book, Stig is a cave man, not a boy.

I loved Stig of the dump but I do not think it needs a sequel, as it would be nicer for it to stay original and old-fashioned, Clive King really understands children like Barney and Edward Ardizzone illustrates beautifuly

This was my favourite book as a 7/8 year old in primary school (so 35 years ago!), and now my son is 7 (and an above average reader) I have bought it for him and he LOVES it! So pleased to have been able to get it for him, such a descriptive and engaging story!

I thought that Stig of the dump is a very good book for children to read. This specific book has been chosen in my school for a challenge for the above average readers. I have really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone of any age !!!

This is one of the few books that I remember very clearly from my childhood. Thanks to this book, I used to make camps in the garden with bits that I could find in the shed and hidden in corners. It is exactly the kind of imaginative play that is encouraged now. Stig of the dump teaches resourcefulness and highlights how wasteful we are as a species. We should all be a bit more like Stig. I wish every child (and adult!) would read it.

Bought this book for my 9 year old son as a stocking filler in the hope that he would enjoy it and not turn his nose up. Just finished reading it and my son absolutely loved it. We took turns reading and my son is disapointed there's not a Stig 2 to follow. The search is on for a follow up book .
