Embassy of the Dead

Publisher: Orion Children’s Books

Staying alive has always come naturally to Jake until the day he accidentally takes delivery of a severed finger and unleashes the wrath of the Grim Reaper.

Jake’s honest mistake kickstarts a series of catastrophic events and while his mum and dad are in blissful ignorance, thinking he is away on a school field trip, Jake is running for his life from rabid, supernatural creatures and the Reaper himself.

Strictly speaking there should be no hope for Jake. Once the Embassy of the Dead has ordered you banished to the Eternal Void, you’re pretty much dead, but Jake has a spectral gravedigger, a ghostly schoolgirl and a phantom fox fighting to keep him alive.

Striking a clever balance between humour and tension, this wacky adventure is witty and creepy, but not too scary. It has intermittent illustrations and is packed with ghosts, grave robbers and gruesome beasts. A compulsive read and a hilarious fright-fest.
