About this book
Katy has always wanted a pet of her own, so when a cute guinea pig comes snuffling into her garden, she’s delighted.
Lettuce – as Katy names her – loves eating the lettuce and carrot Katy feeds her. She even likes cuddling up on Katy’s lap for a stroke. Katy decides to keep her and makes her a secret home in the old greenhouse. But when a new girl at school reveals that she’s lost a guinea pig, Katy has a tough decision to make.
A gentle story, told in short chapters with very sweet colour illustrations, this will strongly appeal to new readers, particularly animal lovers. There’s a subtle theme of doing the right thing, too, which adds depth. The text is designed with lots of space around it, to support beginner and dyslexic readers.
This is another lovely addition to the Little Gems series, which are a good introduction to chapter books.
