Who’s Afraid of the Light?
Publisher: Scribble
This book opens in the deepest, darkest depth of the ocean – and, on a totally black page! However, we soon meet Fergus, who is a real deep-sea creature. The problem is that it’s far too dark to see what Fergus is, apart from his eyes.
Luckily, other deep sea creatures swim past, with their bioluminescence temporarily lighting up the dark water: an anglerfish, a spookfish and two vampire squid, who can flip themselves inside out. Finally, when our book narrator finally finds the flash on their camera, all is revealed… as well as where all the glowing predators have disappeared to!
This fiction/non-fiction mash-up from McGregor contains a factual guide to some of the creatures of the deep ocean at the end, and some fantastic illustration of some fascinating and mysterious fish. There’s an enjoyable anarchic feel here which will appeal to lots of children, and a big surprise reveal too. Great fun.
