Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
Welcome to Dead Town, Raven McKay
Publisher: Everything with Words
When 12-year-old Raven McKay’s parents mysteriously vanish, all they leave behind is a seemingly empty suitcase with a faded black butterfly sticker on the lid. Raven is sent to live with Kitty, a distant relative of her father, in the sinister town of Grave’s Pass. Here, the living and the dead coexist in apparent harmony, although Raven detects a menacing tension between the two groups. She is intrigued by her new school, as it is attended by both living and dead pupils. On her first day, Raven befriends Mack, a human boy whose mother has also disappeared.
Despite Kitty’s warnings to stay away, Raven is drawn to Dead Town, where the ghosts, ghouls, zombies and werewolves reside. Why do people seem to know her there, and what is the significance of the black butterfly motif she spots around the town? Desperate to find Mack’s mum and her own missing parents, Raven must decide who to trust, but as she is pulled deeper into the creepy world of the dead, she is in danger of losing everything.
Gripping, fast-paced and gruesome, this macabre tale is enhanced by stunningly-detailed, atmospheric gothic illustrations. A chilling read, not for the faint-hearted.
