Joey is a young farm horse, sold to the army at the beginning of the First World War. Through his eyes the reader experiences the devastation of the Western Front, his capture by the Germans and his entrapment in No Man's Land.
Joey's tremendous courage touches soldiers of both armies; in turn, he experiences warmth and kindness amid the carnage of war, and homesickness for his old life on the farm.
Morpurgo has approached this bitter conflict from an unusual and moving perspective, focusing on the valuable role that animals played throughout the war, and the dignity that both creatures and men showed in the face of suffering.

I think it is very good because Joey the horse has love in a boy called Albert. Joey has lots of adventures during the first world war and also has a very hard life. I like how it shows you what it was like in WW1.

I think that telling this story through a horses eyes was a wonderful way of showing the war - this book can make you want to cry, but also smile. This book is a book for older readers, as it does have some sad scenes.

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I nearly cried, this book is in the top list with bkackbeauty. I love horses and I think that everybody should read it, yes including YOU! The film was astonishing as well, thank you Michael Morpurgo for writing this magnificent,sspectacular( I just can't find any words to describe this amazement) novel. Well Done! I like all your books, I've read them all! (apart from the ones for smaller children) PS: I now started reading your new book Listen to the Moon.

War horse is a well known, loving story with scenes of death unhappiness and glory. Will Joey be able to survive calvary... the war... or even being away from home. Will captain nickles still be alive? Will YOU enjoy this story try it you'll find the true meaning of love between man and horse.

This is an adventure book Like most of Michael Morpurgo's books it is very sad but descriptive.
