That’s Mathematics

Publisher: Mama Makes Books

Based on the lyrics of a catchy song, this vibrant book shows that we all use maths every day – and it’s fun! Whether you’re counting sheep, bouncing balls or even cutting up a cake to share, you’re using maths skills. Many early maths concepts like measuring, counting and estimating, to name a few, are explained in a simple and easy to understand way, with extra bite-size facts and suggestions and a ‘try this’ activity on every spread.

The author was Scottish Teacher of the Year in 2018 and he was inspired by Tom Lehrer’s original song to create an engaging book that celebrates the amazing subject of maths. Elīna Brasliņa’s bold, energetic illustrations show a diverse range of children getting involved in the maths activities (which are also everyday activities, which is the beauty of the book). The joyful pictures make it a friendly, accessible read for any child in their first few years of school. This would be great to read together at home, as all the activities can be done at home, but it would also be useful in a classroom. There are answers and a glossary at the back, plus helpful parents’ notes and further activities accessed via a QR code.
