Shu Lin’s Grandpa
Publisher: Otter-Barry Books
Dylan’s class has a new girl – Shu Lin. She wears yellow wellies and a pink coat. At break, the girls try to get her to skip with them, but she stands alone at the edge of the playground. She brings little boxes of colourful food for lunch. She doesn’t speak English very well yet. ‘What’s up with her?’ says Barney.
Then one day Shu Lin’s grandpa comes in to show the class his paintings. He doesn’t need to speak as they pore over his artwork, which is beautiful and vivid. As he gazes at the pictures, Dylan can smell the wind through the mountains and feel the dragon’s breath on his neck. Then the class have a go at painting similar pictures, and Shu Lin demonstrates how to hold the paintbrush properly. ‘Thank you,’ says Dylan and she smiles at him.
With a stunning double-gatefold spread that opens out, revealing a beautiful traditional Chinese picture, this story shows how art can connect people, no matter their culture or age. This uplifting story gently points out that everyone’s family and culture is interesting, and worthy of respect. Perfect if you’re looking for a picture book that celebrates difference and empathy.
