Only Ever Yours
Publisher: Quercus
Freida and Isabel have been best friends their whole lives. Now, aged sixteen and in their final year at the School, they expect to be selected as companions - wives to wealthy and powerful men. The alternative - life as a concubine - is too horrible to contemplate.
But as the intensity of the final year takes hold, the pressure to be perfect mounts. Isabel starts to self-destruct, putting her beauty - her only asset - in peril. And then into this sealed female environment, the boys arrive, eager to choose a bride. freida must fight for her future - even if it means betraying the only friend, the only love, she has ever known...
Only Ever Yours is a brilliant and terrifying look at the toxic, competitive, superficial world that today's young women are growing up in. Set against a dystopian backdrop, the novel is full of references to current issues teenagers face, from social media bullying to eating disorders to the pressure to be perfect. But the novel isn't preachy or pedantic: the plot is fast paced and the dialogue whip-smart. As the reader is pulled deeper and deeper into freida's dark world, frightening revelations unfold that are painful to read but impossible to look away from. This debut novel is a triumph and a must-read for all teens, both girls and boys. A story about friendship, self-worth, and a story that stays with the reader long after the book has been put down.
