Norah’s Ark

Publisher: Neem Tree Press

Norah and her unemployed father live in temporary accommodation and rely on benefits and foodbanks to survive. In contrast, Adam lives a life of luxury with his wealthy parents in their large, comfortable home. Although from very different backgrounds, the two children form an unexpected friendship, united by their loneliness and love of animals.

Initially, each child envies the other: Norah craves the security of living in a house with food and hot water, where she doesn’t have to worry about eviction; Adam, who is recovering from leukaemia, is desperate to experience the freedom of roaming wherever he chooses, without his mother watching his every move. However, as their friendship deepens, Norah and Adam realise that they both face challenges and endeavour to help one another to overcome them. When a flood endangers the lives of their animal friends, the duo must work together to save them.

This powerful novel sensitively highlights some really tough issues, including homelessness, addiction, illness and bullying. The chapters are narrated by Norah and Adam in turn, which enables readers to empathise with both characters. An intriguing, poignant and ultimately uplifting tale, with kindness, compassion and honesty at its heart.
