Maisy’s Chinese New Year
Publisher: Walker Books
Maisy and her friends are celebrating Chinese New Year! Maisy sweeps her house to prepare, and then buys new red clothes, because red is a lucky colour. They all hang decorations and eat a delicious feast. Then Ostrich and Penguin arrive, with envelopes of money for everyone. Tiger tells them all the story of the animal race, which is the origin of the animals in the zodiac, and they enjoy fireworks and a parade.
Reading about a familiar character sharing a festivity that a child may celebrate with their own family can be very empowering for that child. Equally, if a child doesn’t celebrate this festivity, Maisy’s gentle introduction to the traditions surrounding it means that this new event is associated with excitement and friendship. Either way, this is a very positive book to share with any child. There is a list of things to spot at the back, encouraging the child to go back and pore over the pages. A lovely celebration of Chinese New Year.
