Using fiction to smash stereotypes 21/03/25
I’m Not Scared, You Are!
Publisher: Little Tiger
Two young children embark on a scary night-time journey in this spooky board book, which contains 24 individual sound-effects. Join them as they tiptoe through the woods, climb aboard a ghost train and enter a foreboding haunted house, where they encounter a rattling skeleton and a ghost who chases them all the way home.
Children will love pressing the buttons hidden throughout the story to summon a range of eerie sounds. These include a croaking toad, a howling wolf, a bubbling cauldron and a particularly chilling chuckle at the end of the tale.
The rhyming text is great to read aloud and the atmospheric illustrations are dark, gloomy and expressive, with visible brushstrokes portraying texture and movement. Full-page artwork is combined with smaller vignettes, creating pace and a sense of anticipation as the tale progresses. Cardboard pages ensure the book will withstand some enthusiastic handling and the rounded corners will prevent unexpected jabs in the eye. A fabulously frightening tale for young readers, perfect for Halloween.
