Witchcraft has been outlawed in England and witch hunters are being celebrated as the saviours of humanity but Hazel Hooper, who has lived an isolated yet happy life with her magical mother, is blissfully unaware of the dangers of the outside world.

Then the unimaginable happens and Hazel's mother is kidnapped by a hideous, drooling demon. The trauma of loss kindles the sparks of magic that lie deep inside Hazel - a magic that she was unaware of and isn't sure how to control.
