Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
Electric Life
Publisher: Troika
Estrella is the perfect society. Everyone says so.
Built a mile above what used to be London, before the great catastrophe, Estrella’s citizens do not experience poverty, homelessness, pain or disease. Everyone and everything is hyper-connected so, at the first sign of anything upsetting the status quo, Medico or Advice will be alerted and fix the problem.
But the nearest thing to a challenge is the constant stream of digital entertainment and virtual reality games that simulate a natural world that no longer exists. And that’s not enough for Alara. She’s bored in a world where boredom is frowned upon.
So, when she gets the chance to execute a secret mission in the toxic, dangerous wastes of London Below, she jumps at the chance even though it terrifies her as much as it excites her.
Set in a post-apocalyptic, sanitised world, this dystopian thriller contains many powerful elements that reflect some of the ways in which our society is already developing. It asks how we know whether those in power are making decisions in our best interests or in their own. Who can/should we trust? And what is it that makes life worth living?
