Cake Girl
Publisher: Andersen Press
This is the story of a lonely witch who bakes herself a cake girl to keep her company on her birthday.
After getting the girl to entertain her, and, Cinderella-like, to do the housework, she threatens to eat her new friend. However Cake Girl is ingenious and convinces the witch that they can be friends if only the witch learns how to be nice to people.
Lucas’ message is entertaining and subtle: you have to be thoughtful and good to people in order to win and maintain friends, while being unkind will only make you unhappy.
His illustrations are wonderfully eccentric and lively, overlaying the message with exuberant detail both within and around the main pictures, offering readers rich opportunities for discussion.
