About this book
As the boat approaches the Isle of Lost Voices, Sam Singh catches sight of the Octopus for the first time. It’s a vast, black, tentacled tower whose outline dominates the landscape. And inside, he believes he will find his brother, Moon.
And that’s how Sam finds himself working for the professor, a collector of languages who was looking for a servant to accompany him to the Isle of Lost Voices.
Sam intends to ditch the professor, known as the Collector, as soon as possible and go in search of his brother. But then he makes a grisly discovery about what the professor is really collecting and finds himself embroiled in a culture war he hadn’t anticipated.
This exciting adventure quest, with elements of magic realism, is set in a fictionalised version of colonial India and explores aspects of imperialism, the caste system and the exploitation of indigenous peoples.
Seeing things from the points of view of Sam and his friend Lola clearly highlights the erroneous and illogical attitudes of superiority that directed the actions of Western incomers motivated by greed and self-interest.
A thrilling historical fantasy, rooted in truth, that might educate as well as entertain.
