14-year-old Kol and his best friend Sully are resigned to life of hardship on the planet Rust, searching through mountains of scrap metal for anything of value. But, after a cave in, the pair make a discovery that will change their lives forever: an ancient spaceship buried in the rubble, powered by mysterious alien technology. 

Before they can react, they are launched into outer space, and it is here that they meet the ship’s owner – a strange girl who has been frozen in stasis for decades. She has woken up with one mission, to destroy the Reapers, the evil robotic empire who rule the galaxy, devouring stars to power their armies. Kol and Sully must decide: will they risk it all to help her take down the Reapers, or go back to their desolate lives on Rust?

This is a fantastic sci-fi adventure which immerses you in a richly layered world from the very first page. There is so much for action fans to enjoy in Kol and Sully’s journey through space, with sinister robots, gadgets, hacking, space bandits, lasers and so much more. The characters are well drawn, and readers will really root for the underdog heroes in Kol and Sully, who always have each other’s backs no matter the danger.

A superb sci-fi action romp for middle grade readers and beyond.
