About this book
Kofi dreams of becoming a professional athlete, so when he is given a scholarship to a prestigious private school because of his running talent, he can’t wait to make a name for himself on the track.
But, burdened by pressure to succeed academically from his mother, high expectations from his local community, and the gradual estrangement of his best friend, Kofi struggles to enjoy life at his new school.
As the only Black student from a working class background, Kofi is picked on for being different from the start, with one particular rival making his life miserable. Kofi’s only outlet is his time on the track and the kindness of the coach who supports his dreams.
Despite the challenges he faces, Kofi never gives up and, with the loving support of his friends and family, has the courage to be true to himself and to run his own race.
This moving story reminds us of the power of family, community and perseverance. Kofi is wonderfully resilient as he triumphs over different obstacles while maintaining an upbeat sense of humour, thanks in large part to his supportive network of friends and family.
Kofi’s story also invites reflection on important messages about social barriers, being proud of your identity, and the power of restorative justice.
