About this book

Isobel loves her school routine. There's macaroni art to create, snacks to enjoy, and playtime with her best friend, Lillian. Everything is exactly as expected, just how Isobel likes it. But one morning, there's a substitute teacher in the classroom, and he does things very differently. First, he switches to a different pasta shape during art class, and then he serves bananas instead of apples at snack time. Isobel's perfectly planned day is utterly ruined, and she just can’t cope. But with a little help from Steve the dog (whose woofs sound a lot like comforting advice), she begins to discover that change is a part of life and that sometimes it can be a good thing.

Isobel Hates Change is a funny yet reassuring picture book that gently explores the challenges of coping with unexpected change. Isobel's frustration when her familiar school routine is disrupted feels authentic and relatable, making her journey especially engaging for young readers who find comfort in routine. With warmth, humour, and the comforting presence of Steve the dog, the story encourages children to see that flexibility can lead to positive experiences.

A wonderful conversation starter, this charming book helps build resilience while reminding children that change isn't always something to fear.

About the author

Marcela Ferreira was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to London as a teenager. She started reading picture books (in English) after her children were born and hasn’t been able to stop since! Her debut picture book, The Queen Next Door, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2024.

About the illustrator

Although he wanted to be a golfer, chef, fighter pilot and master Lego builder (not all at the same time), Mark found that his skills were much more suited to becoming a professional doodler. He graduated with a degree in Illustration from University of Lincoln in 2003 and the Bright Agency started to represent him a few months later. He now works from a studio which is a short walk from his house and shares it with a lobster, a Mogwai and a dancing robot!
