About Pori Drwy Stori Reception

The Pori Drwy Stori Reception programme is a bilingual programme for Reception-aged children with a range of abilities. Pori Drwy Stori builds upon the popular Bookstart programme, which is aimed at younger children.

The programme has been designed and delivered by BookTrust Cymru and is funded by the Welsh Government. Pori Drwy Stori is delivered to all maintained schools in Wales with no sign-up necessary. Online training is available, please select a date and register here.

The programme provides physical and digital resources, to be used by the Reception teacher in the classroom environment and to be used at home by children and their parents and carers

All Pori Drwy Stori resources

Autumn term

Rhyme Challenge – a set of fun and varied English and Welsh rhymes to learn and enjoy. Schools receive booklets and certificates for children and posters for the classroom.

My Weather Watch Calendar – this is a family activity for the autumn term, and can be used as a great interactive task for the autumn half term break. Talking about and recording different types of weather will help children to develop their speech, language, communication and maths skills in the early years.

Spring term

Pori Drwy Stori Book Packs – a pack for every child in your Reception class to take home and keep, including a high quality bilingual picture book, an activity magazine and a library leaflet.

Hide and Sheep cards - each child will receive a set of Hide and Sheep cards to take home. There are lots of fun games to play with the cards both in the classroom and at home.

Summer term

My Book – a unique high quality resource giving the learners the opportunity to create their own book to keep.

The Unicorn's Challenge magazine – The fun activities in the magazine are linked to the Foundation Phase and created to be used with your child as they move from the Reception class to Year 1. Your Unicorn’s Challenge magazines and teacher guide will arrive with your June/ July delivery, for your Year 1 teacher(s) to share with the children in September.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is there any cost to schools?

No – Pori Drwy Stori has been funded by the Welsh Government. All maintained schools in Wales are eligible and will receive the programme automatically. No sign up is necessary.

  • When will resources be delivered to schools?

Resources are delivered twice a year. In January schools receive resources for the Spring and Summer terms. In June schools receive resources for the Summer holiday and the Autumn term.

  • Which children are eligible to receive the Pori Drwy Stori resources?

Pori Drwy Stori packs are intended for all Reception-aged children to use in the classroom as well as to take home and share with family and friends.

We have enough resources for Reception-aged children (4- to 5-years-old) and cannot provide packs for any other year groups or purposes. This means we cannot provide packs for Nursery or Year 1 children, even if these classes are mixed with Reception, or we risk running out of packs.

  • What about children not starting school until later in the year?

Schools should receive enough resources for all the children who are expected to start Reception this school year. We ask that teachers store any spare resources needed for further intakes or for new arrivals during the school year and give them to new Reception children only.

  • Who should I contact if I have a question?

Should you require any further information or support regarding the programme please send your query to [email protected] and we'll respond as soon as we can.
