Wolfboy

Publisher: Bloomsbury Children’s Books

Wolfboy is hungry and he’s hunting for rabbits! Are they in the creek? What about over in Moonberry Meadow? He’s searching everywhere – leaping the ravine and slogging through the soggy bog – and as he searches, he gets more hungry, more huffy, and more growly. But he can’t see the rabbits anywhere – until he catches sight of a pair of tall ears…

This is a brilliant, original and funny picture book with an enjoyable plot twist that will (hopefully) take readers by surprise the first time they read it, and add to the enjoyment on repeat readings. Great use of language and story-building leads up to the plot twist, while eagle-eyed readers will spot some different things happening in the pictures that Wolfboy doesn’t seem to be aware of…

This book also has a very unusual illustration style: Andy Harkness has hand-sculpted the scenes on each page from clay and then photographed them. This more mature style, along with the multi-layered storytelling, makes a fun story that is not only enjoyable on several levels, but for readers across the age ranges to enjoy as well.
