Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
The Silver Road
Publisher: Piccadilly
When Rose is woken one night by a violent hailstorm, something inexplicable draws her out into the garden. There, the huge hailstones form a massive ice giant who hands her an odd, reddish stone before vanishing into the air.
Unsure what to do with this strange gift, Rose consults her two elderly friends Nellie and Gracie who reveal a mind-blowing world of magic hidden right beneath her feet in the Silver Road. Learning that the stone could destroy this magic if it gets into the wrong hands, Rose is determined to keep it safe.
But then the unthinkable happens.
Starting quietly with Rose’s experiences at the hands of an over-privileged bully, the story quickly gains momentum, then accelerates to an epic battle with a one-eyed monster via a dizzying elk ride across Ireland, a marauding spirit army and an evil witch who fights with red hot needle-spears that she pulls from her head.
Dealing with contemporary concerns such as climate change, yet steeped in ancient Irish myth, history and folklore, this thrilling fantasy crackles and fizzes like the magic within its pages and will have wide appeal.
An informative glossary and guide to pronunciation is included.
