Look Out! Hungry Snake: A hide-and-seek flap book

Publisher: Kumusha Books

Hungry Snake is in the mood for a snack, but, unfortunately, all of their prey manages to elude them: the toad that hops away just in time, the squeaky mouse, the screechy owl, the jumpy deer, and the fish that swim away. There’s no snack for the hungry snake today... all they can do is slither away.

This lovely lift-the-flap book – with good, thick pages and flaps –  is colourful and playful, and introduces little ones to a selection of animals and their noises or actions.

As well as that, each new double page spread introduces the idea that each animal does or is something different: the mouse is small and furry, the owl has feathers, and the deer is in the grass. This teaches children more context about the animals included, in a relatable and age-appropriate way.

As ever, flaps are also a great interactive element, which children love to play with, pull, and see what’s underneath.

There’s also a nicely repetitive theme in Snake looking for a snack, although they aren’t successful – which is probably good for many young readers who would feel sad about any of the animals getting eaten.
