Leon: Worst Friends Forever

Publisher: Scholastic

Leon is the superhero of the school! Or so he thinks, even though he doesn’t have any superpowers.

He’s so busy trying to stop the bullies that he doesn’t stop to think whether he’s making things worse rather than better. And he’s so obsessed with his mum’s superhero gadgets that he’s not spending time with Carlos, his best friend. Will he realise his mistake in time, before a villain from his mum’s past returns to wreak revenge?

This is the second in a series, but you don’t have to have read the first book. It quickly becomes clear that Leon’s mum is Ms Magnificent, and he has to keep that secret, as he puffs himself up into a would-be superhero.

Despite this setting, where some people have powers, the core of the story is very relatable because it’s set at school and centres on the friendship between Leon and Carlos. Leon doesn’t treat his friend very well, and the boys fall out. This dynamic will be familiar, of course, as will their obsessions with superheroes and comic books.

The colourful artwork and graphic design perfectly complement the energy of the characters, making this a super-fun read.
