About this book
The Jindari Empire is a peaceful land filled of magic and wonder. But, in the Fortress of Shadow, at the edge of The Great Void, a dark force grows in strength. The Queen of Shadows and her evil forces scheme and plan, intent on destruction and chaos. And, when the forces of Shadow assassinate the ruler of Hightown and his sons, it is up to his last remaining heir, Scarlett Thawn, to defeat the darkness and claim her legacy.
There is so much action and adventure to enjoy in this graphic novel as Scarlett’s story unfolds. There are elemental mage powers, talking animals, mythical characters, double crossings, hand-to-hand combat, mighty machines and much more besides. The storyline is pacey and centres Scarlet and her newly found friend Rex (both around 13) as underdog heroes that readers will really get behind.
Zak Simmonds-Hurn’s illustrations are a brilliant feature of this book, and they add so much to the action. There is a quality to them reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z and other popular animated shows or manga series – the depictions of magic especially burst off the page. Also, the dialogue is written in sentence case and there is not too much text on each page, making the story really accessible.
A great action-adventure graphic novel, perfect for reluctant readers.
