Jonadab and Rita

Publisher: Red Fox

Jonadab is an old, neglected donkey made of worn grey velvet. He has one good friend in the shy toy mouse, Rita. Jonadab also has a secret - he can fly.

One night, he flies off to have fun in the park with the fairies. When he goes home he can't get in, and sure that nobody loves him, he huddles down miserably in the park.

Next day his owner Minnie visits the park just as a dog worries him. His friend Rita contrives his rescue and they all return home. Jonadab recounts to Rita his adventures with the fairies but tells her she is a truer friend than all of them.

Shirley Hughes' evocative illustrations enhance this gentle story of friendship.
